The Young Achiever Awards are held in conjunction with the Whakatāne District Council, Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board and the Rotary Club of Whakatāne West. The Awards recognise high achieving sports people and students in the Whakatāne District.
Nominations are called for each year for students who, in the previous 12 months between 1 October and 30 September, have attained national or international recognition in their sporting or academic achievements, or have won an event while representing the Bay of Plenty.
A sub-committee consisting of representatives from the Council, Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board and Whakatāne West Rotary Club considers each nomination and makes their decisions based on set criteria.
The Awards were introduced by former Mayor Rex Morpeth during his term of office.
